Workplace Bullying

Dear colleagues,

there is one certain topic which comes over and over again and it is about workplace bullying. I found an article which states that bullying at work increases more and some reasons for that might be the economic crisis or narcissistic bosses.

Now I´m interested in your opinion, what do you think are the reasons for bullying and what can be done in order to prevent it.

Regards
Tanja

  1. Thank you Tanja for posting this article.
Well, I think the bullying or bossing discrepancy already existed before the economic downturn(s), however I think that in some industries the issues were even fuelled through the crises.
Ages ago I wrote a paper about the bullying issues in the tourism and hospitality business. What I learned from my research at this time is simple: Whether you become a committer of bullying is not dependent to whether make much or less money, whether your are old, young, smart or less smart. The real determinants are psychological tendencies of the offender and a potential (fitting) victim.
Today each team leader or anybody in a key position should keep an eye on this issue in order to keep a vital and healthy business climate.
Thank you for making us aware of these issues Tanja!

  2. Hi Tanja,

eventhough bullying seems to be a topic related to school or adolescents, this article shows us that unfortunately it is not. Unfortunately bullying can exist everywhere, even on the work place, which is really sad, since it is the place where you are supposed to be for 40 hours or more per week! Luckily I haven't made any of these experiences during my past internship. I agree with Michael that a team leader should keep a close eye on bullying.

  3. Hi Tanja, talking about bullying, this is very very common in China. Not only because bullying actually exists everywhere, but also Chinese culture is contributing to it. We had ECA-CHN this semester and everyone now has a better understanding of Chinese culture. In work everionment, if you are a new comer, you will be the one who is responsible for shitty jobs such as making tea for colleagues, doing some works which are not yours. Even though it can't stand for all cases, but it is kinda rules in offices. Remember as a senior emplyee in this office, if you don't do what I say, I will lose face ;) , and the consequences will be bad~

  4. Hi there! It is a sad fact that workplace bullying occurs much more often than you think. I believe that is in every organization's interest to fight against it as it worsens the work climate, decreases efficiency and it is simply not acceptable to put down certain employees because it makes others feel better. Plus, the employer brand is strongly damaged. I think that there should be a place in every organization where persons who feel bullied or discriminated against can talk about it and they are taken seriously. Maybe organizations will have to ask themselves then if employees who start bullying are employees they want to keep as they obviously lack team spirit.
