This article poses a very interesting question: Should you hire as if your workforce will stay a month, a year or their entire career?
Some entrepreneurs argue that nowadays in most situations it is more clever to hire employees only for a shor-term. They call this system "Tours of duty".
I think there are a lot of things disadvantages that come with Tours of duty though. If an employer only regards you as a short-term asset, they will probably not treat you that good. They won't care about your development for example. And vice versa employees won't care as much for the companies they are working for. This definitely has effects on their work ethics and much more.
What do you guys think about this?
In my opinion, it is not a good idea to hire employees only for a short-term. Because for the organisation, high turnover in initial employment period can become very costly. Beside the obvious cost of recruitment and training, organisation may be confronted with a low morale of other employee, interruption of workflow or damage their reputation. Compare to recruiting, helping employes grow and working to develop their skills is more strategic.
AntwortenLöschenHi Sonja, I totally agree with your poinion. I believe most of the employees, if they know they will only work in the company for a short period of time, they won't pay too much attention on works and the lack of motivation (such as promotion, compensation) would slow down efficiency and company's development. However, this is applicable as well. For instance, manufacturing companies will only need extra (more) emplyees during peak period and after that, they don't need them any more. In order to save cost, the system of tours of duty is favorable.
AntwortenLöschenI agree with you guys, if you hire people with the intention to "let them go" very soon, you will probably not invest a lot of money in their training and professional development. This will lead to low motivation and therefore inefficient workforce. I think that, if necessary in order to be able to meet the demands of the market, hire short-term employees. However, when looking at strategic HR purposes, longer-term employment definitely offers more advantages.
