Recruitment process - the effect of a positive or negative experience

This is an interesting article about the importance of the effects of the recruitment process. Research shows that the negative experience of a job applicant may have severe consequences for the company. What are your experiences/thoughts on this topic? Have you always even received an answer when applying for a job? How did this make you feel and what were your reactions?

  1. I think for companies it is very important to make the recruitment experience a positive one for every applicant. If you turn someone down, you can do it in a nice, constructive way. As mentioned in the article, companies also get a certain reputation from their recruitment strategies. If a friend tells me, to not apply at a certain company for specific reasons, I will listen to her/him. Of course it is hard to be personal and nice to every applicant, however responding to the application should be the least (also responding timely). I once applied for a place for a so called "duales Studium" at Lufthansa and they answered me 3 years later. This just gives me a bad impression of their HR systems.

  2. This is a very delicate topic and every company deals differently with it. For my PTS I was applying at bigger companies for several jobs where you can be pretty sure that you are just one out of thousands that try their luck. If a company gets everyday a large number of applications, it is simply impossible to reply every single one, however, in this case, some companies at least send you a standard text as reply.
I also experienced that a company from Hambourg even sent me a letter! I was really surprised about this, as in nowadays world almost everything is done via web therefore I was positively surprised that they put 'so much effort' in it.

  3. It really can make a difference I suppose. If a candidate is treated friendly in a professional manner instead of being treated in a hostile way this can influence the overall opinion of the company significantly. I have made several experiences in the past. No matter if it is a bad experience like in Hella’s comment an answer received months or even years later or a good experience like a well-organized assessment center on the company’s venue. For me the most important thing is to be treated as an individual human resource and in case of good experiences I tend to apply again in future or recommend the company to other applicants. The fact that a lot of applications are done via the web leads to a much impersonal environment which leads eventually to a negative recruitment experience.

  4. I agree that the way companies treat applicants contribute to how the enterprise and its products are seen by the candidate after the recruiting process. If the company treated the applicant with respect but the final answer was negative, he will still perceive the company in a positive way.
However, we know that companies receive a great amount of applications every day since most candidates use e-mails. Most of them are standardized and some not even directly adressed to the company. This makes it difficult for companies to send personalized answers. As companies have to check applications anyway, they should at least send a standardized answer to all applicants.
