As we discussed the issue of performance appraisal in today's class, I wondered how you'd think about such assessments? Have you had any good/bad experiences in your past, or discovered differences among different countries?

Here's an article that emphasizes the need of changing traditional performance appraisals while suggesting new ways of managing and assessing an employee's performance.

What do you think about the new keys to success as outlined in the article?
How do you personally think changes could look like (in Europe, Austria)?

  1. Performance appraisals are not only of advantage for the employee but also the employer and to conduct them on a yearly basis is, as in the article outlined, way to less as a employer cannot judge an entire year of an individual employee.
During my summer job at an architectural office where around 30 emplyees work, I experienced that every monday the whole team meets and every employee talks about his/her work from the last week and whats currently on their agenda. This is a great way of getting regular impressions of the work each employee does therefore an employer can easily sum up the performance when conducting a performance appraisal. Nevertheless, scheduling a performance appraisal only once a year is in my opinion to less, at least for employees that just started working in the company. Whereas for employees that work for the company over years, an annual performance appraisal might be sufficient.

  2. Performance appraisals are a very important tool to motivate employees on the one hand and to help companies assess their employees according to talent and performance on the other hand... therefore they are beneficial for everyone and should be conducted more than 1 time per year... in the course of writing bachelor thesis 1, i interviewed the head of HR of the american company "3M" and she also pointed out the importance of performance appraisals... they conduct them at least 2 times per year, sometimes more often! I believe that many companies do already understand the huge impact HR has on a company's employees and therefore on the overall organisational success since employees are one of the most important asset for many organisations in today's challenging and rapidly changing business world.
